Dendrobates Auratus or also known as Green-and-black poison dart frog can be found in Central and South America, from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to southeastern Brazil and Bolivia. They were also introduced in Hawaii by humans and very quickly multiplied there.
Dendrobates Auratus frogs inhabit the rain forests floor and this is a terrestrial species. They prefer locations near small streams or pools which they also use for their tadpoles. It is also interesting to know that in the heavily populated areas of Hawaii frogs can lay their eggs even in broken beer bottles or old cans instead of the usual puddle.
These dart frogs can have many color variants and it is one of the most variably colored species of poison dart frogs. But most of them are black and either green or light blue, with the black in bands or spots. The approximate lenght of adult frog is about 4 cm long. The same as other poison dart frogs Dendrobates Auratus use their bright colors to encourage predators with color vision to avoid the frogs but they are not poisonous in your home terrarium.
Dendrobates Auratus male attracts a female with calling consisting of trilling sounds. The calling is not loud and barely audible near the terrarium.
Green-and-black poison dart frog remains one of the most commonly kept. These frogs have bright colors. They are easy to care, easy to breed and their tadpoles are very easy to rise.
