Oophaga Histrionica inhabits tropical rainforests of western Ecuador, north through the region of Colombia. These frogs choose the rainforests floor where moist, humid conditions are present. O. histrionica are found moving around on fallen branches, leaves of tropical plants and over the leaf litter on the ground of the forest. (Zamora, 1999; National Aquarium in Baltimore, 1999)They are an arboreal species and prefer to hide in dense foliage or bromeliads. They are often called poisonous frogs, but they pose no danger to their owner when kept in a terrarium. In their wild habitat some plants contain various alkaloids and toxins, insects feed on these plants and frogs use these insects. Frogs have learned to use these toxins to protect themselves. A combination of their striking colors and the toxins stored in their glands help ward off potential predators. In captivity the Tarapoto frogs do not contain any of these toxins due to the diet provided to them. They don’t have access to the food they would be eating in the wild.

Tarapoto frogs live near streams and ponds, or right on the edge of slow moving water. It is very important to know that they are not very good swimmers and you need to remember about this preparing a suitable vivarium for them.

Once mature, the males will boldly perch in the open and call out to attract females. Their calling can be heard very well from long distances and resembles the singing of some strange mysterious bird. When a female selects a male, the pair will hop away to a nice quiet place, often in a bromeliad, and mate.

For today these are my favorite frogs in our collection. They are very small, very active, very colorful, have very beautiful calling… And with right care conditions they can have very 10 years life span..
